USNA ’93
Curt Mueller grew up in Atascosa, Texas, a rural town outside of San Antonio. At the Naval Academy he majored in Political Science but went into the Nuclear Power Program. Right out of the Academy he studied on a civilian scholarship to the Karl Ruprechts University in Heidelberg, Germany. After a year at the University, he went through the Nuclear Power pipeline and reported to the USS CALIFORNIA (CGN 36) in Bremerton, Washington.
And from a separate page…. After graduation, I attended the University of Heidelberg on the Otto Zipf Scholarship where I spent 14 months working on my German and towards a Political Science degree. The Navy had plans other than me finishing grad school so it was off to the Nuclear Power pipeline and SWOS and then to my first (and only) ship the USS California. Shortly after joining my ship, I decided to come out to family and tendered my resignation.
After finishing my service obligation, I left the Navy in Bremerton, WA and stayed on the West Coast. I went to work for Pepsi and after a few moves (not unlike the Navy), I’ve ended up in Portland, OR, where I live with my partner, Mitch.
In 1998, after a Persian Gulf deployment and a counter-narcotics deployment on the CALIFORNIA, Curt left the Navy. He went to work for the Pepsi in Seattle, Washington. Pepsi has been a lot like the Navy for Curt. He moved from Seattle to San Francisco in a variety of jobs. Most recently Pepsi has him in Portland, Oregon. He currently supports 5 states on the West Coast for Pepsi-Cola as the Northwest Market Unit Marketing Equipment Manager.
In Portland, he met his partner, Mitch. Curt loves the Pacific Northwest and enjoys hiking and ultra-marathoning.
I wouldn’t trade my time in the Navy. I met some amazing people, made life-long friends, and got to do a lot of things that most people would never get a chance to do. With ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ the hallmark of my graduation year, I couldn’t see myself making a career of the Navy. Interestingly, even then, I took my buddies out to dance clubs and no one seemed to mind. It’s only a matter of time before we get things right and have a military that defends American liberty and can enjoy some of that same liberty.
