Heather Davies grew up in Baldwinsville, NY, a small suburb of Syracuse. Recruited by Navy’s Diving Team (springboard and platform, not scuba), she began her naval journey during the summer of 1989. Over the course of her four years at the Academy, Heather received Division II All-America recognition on both the 1- and 3-meter springboards, was part of a Navy Swimming Team that defeated Army all four years (Go Navy! Beat Army!), and graduated with honors with a degree in Aerospace Engineering in May of 1993.

Heather’s first duty station was the U.S. Naval Facility at Brawdy, Wales where she served as an Operations Watch Officer as part of the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System. While in Wales, Heather reconnected with her ancestral roots and fell in love with the Welsh people and culture. Earning official “plank owner” status, Heather helped to decommission the facility during the summer of 1995 before transferring to Austin, TX, “The Live Music Capital of the World.”

In Austin, Heather was fortunate to be stationed at The University of Texas and spent several years as an Officer Recruiter covering a territory that included Austin, San Antonio, and much of South Texas. When not recruiting, Heather thoroughly immersed herself in all of the wonderful cultural, educational, and athletic opportunities afforded by this great and diverse city. In 1998, she chose to exit the military and make Austin her home.

Heather graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2004 with her Masters degree in Social Work. She now serves at the University as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a program dedicated to risk reduction education and survivor support regarding the issues of relationship violence, sexual violence, and stalking. For fun, she enjoys cycling, hiking, painting, song-writing, and watching the sun set on LadyBird Lake with her journey mate, Shane.

Heather is a proud queer member of USNA Out and salutes all of its members and all those LGBTQ-identified members of our military who currently serve under the oppression of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
