Eric Shangle was a world-ranked swimmer in high school who entered the Naval Academy on July 1, 1993. He had no idea what he was getting into. Eric had visited the Academy while growing up and immediately fell in love the the "yard" and the prestigious uniforms, but he didn't realize what it truly meant to be a midshipman. Lucky for Eric, he was able to easily embrace life as a mid in 36th Company.
While at the Academy, Eric swam all four years. He was co-captain of the men's swim team for his firstie year (1996-97). swimming took up most of his time while there, but he did manage to squeeze in a few classes. He majored in Ocean Engineering and eventually became a MetOc (Meteorology and Oceanography) officer. This proved to be a great fit for Eric. Throughout his career he was able to utilize the training, education, and experiences he had while at the Naval Academy. Eric quickly adapted to the navy and cherishes his time while on active duty.
The following is a list of Eric's duty stations:
Eric resigned from active duty in January 2006. He has been actively involved with USNA Out since 2003.
Since becoming a civilian, Eric has been working in Human Resources within the hospitality industry. The navy afforded Eric two graduate degrees (MHR & MBA). He utilizes his naval experience and this education on a daily basis while working in Human Resources. Developing managers, union negotiations, and daily hotel operations all relate back to what he learned as a Midshipman. Eric feels that without his time on the Severn, he would not be where he is today.
Eric now lives with his husband David and dog Bucky in Noe Valley of San Francisco. Eric and David met in 2002 and have been together ever since. David and Eric were officially married in San Francisco on October 14, 2008. This was a wonderful day that was share by two other USNA Out members.
Please feel free to contact Eric here at USNA Out.
