I first met Hubert when he came to stay with me and my family while I was house-sitting in Annapolis for two weeks in the summer of 2007. I invited all USNA Out members to visit, and he was one of many who accepted. I remember that something went awry with his travel plans from Florida, and he was not sure when he would arrive. Over at the Naval Academy touring around with my family and friends, I received a phone call that he was arriving soon at the house. I left the tour and headed back.
I had never met him before, but

I had never met him before, but
had exchanged many emails and even had a few phone conversations leading up to his Annapolis visit. Coming down the brick sidewalk, I saw a gentleman standing at the front door with a suitcase. It was him, of course. I greeted Hubert with a hug and warm welcome.
Over the next several days I had fun getting to know Hubie, learning about his life experience over meals, strolls about the town and Academy, and evening visits. As one might be able to tell from his profile on USNAOut.org, his life wasn’t easy. Hubert had good friends and family to rely on, whom he loved and from whom he kept no secrets.
I will remember Hubert Dorsett for his gentle spirit and kind heart. I wish him fair winds and following seas wherever he is today.
